About
Jean Atkinson lives and works in north Cumbria, close to where the northern fringe of the Lake District overlooks the Solway Firth, areas that inspire a lot of her work.

She was born and brought up in southern India where her father worked as a doctor in a leprosy hospital. She returned to the United Kingdom with her family and trained as a teacher at the Froebel Institute in London. As part of her teaching diploma she specialized in art, especially textiles, and worked as a teacher of Nursery and Reception-aged children for the whole of her career. Upon retirement in 2011, Jean completed an Art and Design course at the University of Cumbria in Carlisle, followed by a Foundation Degree in drawing.

Jean is self taught working mainly in acrylics and oils on unframed boxed canvas. Jean’s approach and excitement to her art is very much like a child in a sweetie shop! After years of ‘Blue Peter ones I made earlier’ for the under 5s, Jean is enjoying exploring different media to try and capture the special atmosphere of Solway seascapes, the grandeur of her local Lakeland fells and mountains, as well as experimenting with more impressionistic and abstract subjects.
